SEPTEMBER 16 -- TODAY IN THE HISTORICAL SCIENCES

1725: NICOLAS DESMAREST is born at Soulaines-Dhuys, France.  He will
study the prismatic basalt formations of Auvergne in central France,
and will realize in 1763 that they are of volcanic origin.
