Misc. Notes
The immigrant Thomas Howlett has been comprehensively studied by a number of researchers; Anderson’s GMB157 summarizes what is known. Howlett arrived in Massachusetts Bay in 1630, and late in that year he became the 51st member of the Boston church. He was made a freeman 4 March 1633/4. According to Anderson,281 he was “Apparently trained as a surveyor, for he was in great demand in laying out lands and determining [p. 1025] boundaries between towns.” His name frequently appears in colony documents, especially relating to surveying and military service. With his wife Alice he removed to Ipswich in 1633, being among the first settlers of that town. Anderson reports282 that by 13 March 1638/9 he is being referred to as sergeant, and “On 14 May 1645 ‘Thomas Howlet is confirmed ensign at Ipswich, according to their choice’ [MBCR 2:100, 3:27].” He also served as deacon in the Ipswich church.
