3096. Thomas WYMANT527, 9G Grandfather, son of 6192. Thomas? WYMANT & 6193. Ellen BRAND. Born abt 1565-1570.

According to Threlfall’s GMC50528, Thomas Wymant “was born about 1565-70, probably at Barkway, Hertfordshire. There on 8 November 1593, he married Joan Cressal, i.e. Chrishall. Her surname is derived from the parish of Chrishall in Essex just five miles to the northeast of Barkway. He may be the Thomas Wymant, widower, who married 13 March 1632 at Saint Albans, Jane Thorington (or Thornton), a widow of Saint Peter’s parish. He left no will.

“Thomas was probably the son of an earlier Thomas Wymant of Barkway wo married there 17 September 1562, Ellen Brand. This senior Thomas and Ellen (Brand) Wymant were parents of a son William who had a daughter, Ann, baptized in 1599. The senior Thomas was in turn probably the son of a still earlier Thomas Wymant, born about 1515, and probably the father of Henry, baptized 4 March 1542/3 at Barkway, of Richard who had a daughter, Katherine, of Ciceley, who married 30 November 1559 Robert Gue of Ardeley, and of Thomas as deduced. Thus, there were apparently three generations of Thomases.”

According to Threlfall’s GMC50531, “THOMAS RICHARDSON was born about 1565-70. On 24 August 1590 [Threlfall gives this date as 25 August on p. 536] at West Mill, Hertfordshire, he married Katherine Duxford of that parish. The marriage record states that he was of Standon, which is the next parish to the south. She was the daughter of Richard and Joan Duxford, and was born about 1565-70. They settled down in West Mill.

“Katherine was buried 10 March 1630/31 [Threlfall gives this date as 1631/32 on p. 536] at West Mill. Thomas was buried there 7 January 1633/4. An abstract of his will follows.”

Thomas Richardson’s son Ezekiel had been comprehensively documented in Anderson’s GMB532 where it is noted that “Samuel Richardson and Thomas Richardson, brothers of Ezekiel, arrived in New England by 1635; Francis Wyman and John Wyman, sons of Ezekiel Richardson’s sister Elizabeth, also came to New England [Sarah Hildreth Anc 25-27].”

Thomas Richardson and Katherine Duxford are ancestors to U.S. Presidents Bush, Coolidge, Hoover (probably), and Pierce,533 and to suffragist Susan B. Anthony.417

3100. Michael NUTT535, 9G Grandfather. Buried on 24 Nov 1630 in Barking, Suffolk, England.

According to Threlfall’s GMC50536, “MICHAEL NUTT probably grew up in or near Barking, Suffolk, England, for in that parish on 23 May 1586, he married Elizabeth Jackaman. On 5 February 1617/18, she was buried in the same parish. They apparently lived there during the thirty two years they were married, for here their several children were baptized. He married again in 1619 at Old Newton, Suffolk, Christian Godard. Michael Nutt was buried on 24 November 1630 at Barking, Suffolk, ‘an oulde man of Needham’, and she, ‘a poor widow of Needham’ was buried on 29 June 1631, also at Barking. According to Smith,537 “William and Joan Brown were married and their children born before the commencement of the Sawbridgeworth registers, but their probate records describe their children and leave hints of more distant relatives. It is possible that William’s eldest brother was Thomas, since William remembered Thomas’ son, John, herhaps the ‘heir male,’ in his 1565 will. It is equally possible that the Thomas in question was William’s own son and the John was William’s eldest grandson.” Smith includes a transcript of William Browne’s will here, and continues (p. 170): “In her will eight years later, Joan did not mention three of William’s sons, William, Thomas and Nicholas, leading to speculation that they might not have been her children. She did mention John and Laurence, and gave them duties but no legacies.” Following a transcription of Joan’s will, Smith concludes (p. 171): “These two wills indicate a comfortable household and hint at occupation for William, perhaps carried on by son Nicholas. The ‘shoppe bord’ could have been a table in their place of business, but we really have no indication that that business might have been.”

According to Smith,540 “In Trinity Term, 5 Elizabeth, William sold his land consisting of a messuage and land in ‘Sabrichesworth’ by fine to Edward Leventhorp, Esq., (‘Feet of Fines for Hertfordshire,’ The Herts. Genealogist and Antiquary, 1[1895]:337).

“This interesting family gave rise to a significant cluster of New England immigrants. Daughter Mary was mother of at least four Browne immigrants, as seen above, and son Thomas fathered three with Massachusetts Bay connections; Phebe, wife of John Perry of Roxbury, Mary, wife of William Heath of Roxbury, and Hester, wife of Thomas Miller, whose sisters immigrated.

“An early article on the Cramphorne family appeared in NYG&B Record 70[1939]:244, correctly identifying immigrants Daniel and Mary. Unfortunately, the same article incorrectly reported almost every date taken from the parish registers. The following presentation incorporates the correct dates. The Record author was also unaware of Mary1 Cramphorne’s early death and her husband William Heath’s remarriage to another Mary (Register 132[1978]:20).”
