16th Generation
54240. John? WARREN830, 13G Grandfather. Born say 1450s in Suffolk, England?

Smith831 conjectures that this John Warren may be the father of Robert and Thomas Warren. John Warren “appeared in the Military Survey list of 1522 for Babergh Hundred in the town of Wiston, Suffolk, England. At that time he was called a husbandman and credited with lands there valued at £1 per year and with moveables valued at £6 (1522 Military Survey, 66). He appeared again in 1524 in the Subsidy Return for Wiston with valuables again rated at £6 (1524 Subsidy Return, 21).

“The Warren family has a long history in Nayland and adjacent parishes. In the Subsidy return of 1327, a ‘Waltero Waryn’ was rated at £3 in ‘Neylond.’ In 1441 two wills for men named John Warren were probated, one dated 11 July 1441 for John Warren of Stoke Nayland, fuller (Archdeaconry of Sudbury 2:60) and one dated the penultimate day of November 1441 for John Warren of Nayland (Archdeaconry of Subdury 2:20).

“Only John’s proximity to Robert and Thomas suggest that he may be related. He could as easily be a brother as their father.”

According to the English ancestry section by J. Gardner Bartlett in the Shed Genealogy,832 Thomas Shedd “was born in Chawreth (now Broxted), County Essex, in 1508, but when a young man settled in the adjoining rural parish of Debden in Uttlesford Hundred where he passed the rest of his life. This hilly parish covers about forty-five hundred acres, has a population of about eight hundred, and contains six manors, viz: Debden Hall, Deanes, [p. 13] Tendring, Weldbarnes, Molehall, and Amberden Hall, the latter located on rising ground in a grove two miles south-east of the church.... 62960. John LOKER-RIDDLESDALE833, 13G Grandfather, son of 125920. Robert? LOKER-RIDDLESDALE & 125921. Joan? _____. Buried on 2 Jul 1552 in Bures St. Mary, Suffolk/Essex, England. Will dated on 12 Jul 1552 at Bures St. Mary, Essex, England.

What is known about John Loker/Riddlesdale is reviewed in Threlfall.834 John “was very likely the eldest son, by a first marriage, of Robert Ridsdale of Halstead which is about six miles southwest of Bures. The fact that they used these two alternate surnames indicates that they were of the same immediate clan.

“John Ridsdale’s wife was named Joan. They apparently lived in that part of Bures which lies south of the River Stour and is in the county of Essex. John Ridsdale was buried in the churchyard of Bures 2 July 1552. His will, obviously an oral one, was written up and dated ten days after his burial.” A transcript of the will follows. How this family came to use both the names Loker (Locar) and Riddlesdale (Redysdale, Ridsdale, etc.) is not known, but they did so for several generation, and both names are often commonly used in contemporary documents in a form such as “Rydsdalle aka Locar.” After arriving in New England the Riddlsedale part of the name was dropped, and all subsequent members of the family went by the single surname Loker.

63516. Henry RIDDLESDALE835, 13G Grandfather, son of 127032. Jasper RIDDLESDALE & 127033. Elizabeth _____. Born abt 1520-8. Will dated on 20 Jun 1591 at Boxford, Suffolk, England. Buried on 25 Jun 1591 in Boxford, Suffolk, England.

According to Threlfall’s GMC50836, Henry Riddlesdale “was probably the eldest son of Jasper and Elizabeth Ridsdale (or Riddlesdale) of Boxford, Suffolk. He was probably born about 1520-1528 [Threlfall gives this as 1518-20 on p. 320], presumably in Boxford. The parish register of Boxford starts in 1557, so there is no record of his marriage. His wife’s name was Joan, according to the baptismal records of his last three children.

“In 1555, Henry Rydysdale was paid 6d. by the church-wardens of Boxford for carriage of a load of wood. He helped to organize a church ale* [original footnote: “*A money-making social gathering involving the provision of food, drink, and entertainment.”] in 1560, was a churchwarden himself in 1562. He was assessed at £10 in 1568.

“Henry was buried on 25 June 1591 [Threlfall gives this date as 15 June on p. 320] at Boxford. Joan survived him.” An abstract of Henry Riddlesdale’s will follows.

63536. William BRACKETT837, 13G Grandfather, son of 127072. William BRACKETT. Born abt 1515 in Sudbury, Suffolk, England. Will dated on 4 May 1575. Buried on 6 May 1575 in Sudbury, Suffolk, England (St. Peter’s Church). Will proved on 5 Jul 1575.

According to Threlfall’s GMC50838, William Brackett, “like his brothers George and Thomas, and his father before him, lived in Sudbury, Suffolk. He was born about 1515-1520. He was a butcher by trade and had a shop, or stall as it was called, in Sudbury. This he left to his son William.

“However, it appears that he lived for a few years in Bury Saint Edmunds, for here we find baptismal records of several children. Of the six entries, only the last one for the baptism of a daughter gives the father’s name. Presumably all the others were also William’s children. Also, there was no other known William Brackett and there is no record otherwise of him in Bury Saint Edmunds, so he must have returned to his native Sudbury where he died. Sudbury and Bury Saint Edmunds are about 14 miles apart.

“In the 1568 Subsidy Return, he is listed in the parish of Saint Peter, and was taxed 14 shillings on £5 worth of goods.

“On 4 May 1575, he made his will and was buried two days later on the 6th at Saint Peter’s, not Saint Gregory’s as he had requested in his will.

“On 11 September 1575, four months later, at Saint Gregory’s Church, Alice Brackett remarried to Richard Morells (or Merrells).” An abstract of William Brackett’s will follows.

According to Threlfall’s GMC50840, Andrew Vincent “of Bildeston, Suffolk, England, was probably born 1520-1530 at Bildeston. He married Alice _____ and had eight known children. He made his will on 3 December 1580, being sick and knowing that their death was near. He probably died the next day for he was buried on the 5th in the churchyard at Bildeston. An abstract of his will follows. From this will it can be seen that he owned a fair amount of property, and was a substantial man of his day. Some of this property, if not all, had been inherited from his father. His home was on Newbery Street in Bildeston.”

According to Threlfall’s GMC50842, “JOHN FROST of Glemsford and Hartest, Suffolk, England, was born about 1530-35. He was a clothier as we can infer from his will. On 29 January 1558/9 at Glemsford, he married Ann Scott. She was the daughter of Richard Scott of Glemsford, also a clothier. Sometime after the birth of their last child, they moved to Hartest, the next village. There, on 30 July 1588, Anne, wife of John Frost, was buried. John Frost remarried, for when he died, he left a widow named Ellen. He died and was buried at Hartest 6 February 1609/10. His will, apparently a nuncipative one, was dated the same day he was buried, so we can assume he also died that day.” An abstract of John Frost’s will follows.
He married Anne SCOTT841, 13G Grandmother 29 Jan 1558/9 Glemsford, Suffolk, England.

According to Threlfall’s GMC50844, “JOHN BELGRAVE of Leverington, Cambridgeshire, England, married Joanna Strutt, daughter of John and Catherine Strutt of Glemsford, Suffolk, 22 September 1560 at Glemsford. Joanna was buried at Leverington 14 August 1577. John Belgrave married secondly at Saint James parish, Bury Saint Edmunds, 25 August 1578, Elizabeth Fayerfoxe (or Fairfax) of Bury Saint Edmunds.
